What are the essentials for a hippy wardrobe?

Think you're a hippy? Check out our list of the hippy wardrobe staples and see if you can tick them off your list!

Tie Dye

Is it even possible to be a hippy and NOT own a piece of tie-dye clothing?

Tie-dye has its roots in traditional West African textiles, pre-Columbian Peruvian fabrics, and Japanese shibori as a type of “resist-dyeing”, but was made HUGELY popular in the 1960’s by Woodstock hippies. Here at Hippy Clothing we LOVE a bit of tie-dye and have a wide range of t-shirts, skirts, dresses, dungarees, leggings and much more in our store.

Harems

The hippy wardrobe staple for lounging and being comfy in style.

The origin of Harem pants (or Trousers) goes back almost 2,000 years. They are believed to originate from the dress-like tunic called Dhoti, which was worn as a traditional men’s garment in the eastern world. See our blog The remarkable history of harem pants to find out more.

Patchwork

"We are all patchwork, and so shapeless and diverse in composition that each bit, each moment, plays its own game" - Michel de Montaigne

Patchwork is the technique of sewing small pieces of fabrics, of varied colours, patterns, and textures together to produce a larger design. The word “patchwork” isn’t usually something you’d associate with high fashion - maybe it sparks images of your grandmother’s handmade patchwork quilt… Which is why us hippies love it so!

Maxi skirts

We love the midi and the mini too... but the maxi skirt is close to our hippy hearts

A beautiful, flowing maxi skirt will be a piece that you turn to time and time again when crafting gorgeous hippy outfits. We love the way they flow so freely, allowing you maximum freedom of movement, and a way to express your style, with femininity and grace.

Flower crowns and funky hats

“I’d rather wear flowers in my hair than diamonds around my neck.”

We reckon people don't make the most of hats... they are the perfect accessory to make you stand out and to completely reinvent your outfit! Wearing a good (or maybe a little crazy!) hat can help to bring you a whole new wave of confidence. Flower crowns are also a long-standing hippy symbol; although flowers have been worn in hair for hundreds of years, the hippies really owned this look back in the 60's.

Eye-Catching Prints (and rainbow!)

"Try to be a rainbow in someone's cloud" - Maya Angelou

And last but by no means least, funky prints and colours are VITAL to a hippy wardrobe. The more outrageous the better! At Hippy Clothing Co we love a rainbow piece (if you didn't already notice!); wearing it can really lift your mood and make you feel amazing.
